My Three Favorite Numbers

My Three Favorite Numbers

October 02, 2026

As a financial planner, people often assume my favorite numbers involve market returns, tax rates, or retirement projections.

While those things matter, the truth is that my favorite numbers are much more personal.

They represent milestones.

They represent progress.

They represent years, and sometimes decades, of hard work paying off.

After more than a decade of helping families navigate their financial lives, I've realized there are three numbers that always make me smile.

Number One: $1 Million in Net Worth

For many clients, this milestone comes before they realize it.

Years of mortgage payments.

Steady retirement contributions.

Growing investment accounts.

Building equity.

Paying down debt.

Then one day we look at the numbers and realize:

"You're a millionaire."

Sometimes clients laugh.

Sometimes they're shocked.

Sometimes they don't believe me at first.

What I love about this milestone is that it reflects their entire financial life, not just their investments.

It's evidence of years of intentional decisions.

It's proof that small actions repeated consistently can create extraordinary results.

Number Two: $1 Million in Investable Assets

This milestone feels different.

A million-dollar net worth may include home equity and other assets.

A million dollars in investable assets represents something else entirely.

It represents decades of saving.

Decades of discipline.

Decades of choosing future freedom over present consumption.

For many households, this is the point where retirement starts to feel real.

The dream begins to move from possibility to probability.

I still enjoy looking at the screen and sharing that moment with clients.

Because behind every account balance is a story.

A story of sacrifices made.

Goals pursued.

Challenges overcome.

And commitments honored.

Number Three: Full Retirement

This one may be my favorite.

Not when one spouse retires.

Not when retirement is "sometime next year."

Not when someone gives notice.

I mean the day the household is fully retired.

The day we've planned for.

The day we've talked about.

The day we've projected again and again.

The day that finally arrives.

What makes this milestone special is that it's no longer about accumulation.

It's about transition.

It's about beginning a new chapter.

It's about turning years of planning into reality.

Some clients travel.

Some volunteer.

Some spend more time with grandchildren.

Some start businesses.

Some simply enjoy having control over their schedule for the first time in decades.

Every retirement looks different.

And that's exactly how it should be.

The Best Part

What I enjoy most isn't the number itself.

It's knowing the journey behind it.

I've worked with some clients for more than 13 years.

I've watched careers evolve.

Families grow.

Children leave for college.

Businesses start and sell.

Dreams change.

Life happens.

Then one day we're sitting in a meeting and realize:

"We did it."

Those moments never get old.

It's Never Really About the Number

As much as I love numbers, I know they're only part of the story.

A million-dollar net worth isn't the goal.

A million dollars invested isn't the goal.

Retirement isn't even the goal.

The real goal is the life those milestones make possible.

More freedom.

More choices.

More confidence.

More time with the people you love.

Those are the things worth celebrating.

The numbers simply help us measure the progress along the way.

And after all these years, I still get excited when clients reach them.

Because their success feels like something worth celebrating together.
